The Ironman Triathlon is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and one full marathon without any breaks, and it sounds like your average librarians worst nightmare. After all, don’t all librarians like reading, and cats, and shh’ing people?
Meet Andy Holgate, Lancaster University Librarian by day and Ironman competitor by night. This gruelling competition started as a test for US Navy Seals and definitely wasn’t the arena for an 18 stone librarian one week away from his wedding, who couldn’t swim and didn’t own a bike.
Seven years later and three stone lighter, Andy Holgate has completed 5 Ironman races, numerous triathlons and is the author of two best-selling books. Join us at Central Library as he discusses his inspirational and moving journey to triathlon success.
