‘Orwell feared those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one’ – Neil Postman

To say we were excited to see that the theatre adaptation of Brave New World was coming to Blackpool is an understatement.
We loved the book and we can’t wait to see what the show is like.

For those of you who haven’t read the book, we highly recommend it. It’s definitely one of our favourite dystopian novels. It’s often stated to be counterpart to Orwell’s 1984- but we find this novel much more chilling and haunting that Orwell’s vision. Huxley displays the world as a perfect utopia where the government segregates and controls the population with human conditioning. The need for love, families and stability has been replaced with consumption, promiscuity and happiness inflicted through drug use.

We follow Bernard Marx a character that feels increasingly trapped by this manufactured society. To combat these feelings Bernard and a lady friend visit the Savage area of the land and are greeted by individuals with significantly different values to themselves. As Bernard returns home, he begins to question what the benefits are of living in a world where human ambition is surrendered for the sake of societal harmony.

After all, is it more important to be blindly happy, or free?
