Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
A short, intense novel set in America during the Great Depression. The story follows the trials and tribulations of two friends – George Milton and Lenny Small as they try to achieve their dream of raising enough money to buy their own small holding. They travel from ranch to ranch as farm hands trying to keep their heads down working hard and keep out of trouble but Lenny has a history of mishaps with George acting like his protective brother. Of Mice and Men has a fascinating plot with many colourful characters dealing with racism, bullying and struggles but with the main theme of strong friendship running throughout the book.
This text is regularly set for GCSE English exam and once read never forgotten. If you have not read this great short novel please add it to your must read list.
