Brrrr! These cold wintry evenings are made for sitting by the fire and reading; all cosy and content. Now you can join a book club and not have to leave your toasty haven. Curl up on your sofa in your penguin onesie and enjoy some bookish chat with Bookpool.
November’s Bookpool pick is The Illuminations by Andrew O’Hagan. A striking novel about war, family, and memory. The Illuminations was longlisted for the Man Booker Award in 2015.
This is the story of Anne Quirk, once a pioneering documentary photographer but now forgotten, and fighting the onset of dementia; and of her grandson Luke, a captain in the British Army. When Luke’s mission in Afganistan goes terribly wrong he returns home, only to find secrets from his family’s past have begun to emerge. Anne and Luke set out to the seaside town of Blackpool to confront the mystery of Anne’s past.
We’ll be chatting about The Illuminations on Thursday 17 November from 8pm. Why not join us?
